Is It Worth It?

The most common goal for people I work with is unquestionably fat loss. Easily 70-75% with the other 25-30% wanting to focus on strength, performance, muscle growth, or just general health and well-being. That’s a pretty strong desire to lose weight.
Almost everyone that comes to me has tried something. Very rarely is working with me someone’s first attempt to change his or her life and transform their body. Very rarely is it even the fifth plus. Maybe this is you. You’ve tried high-carb, low-carb, paleo, flexible dieting/IIFYM, bodyweight training, barbell training, running, weight watchers, South Beach, intermittent fasting…the list goes on.
And yet, here you are. Still trying to get lean, strong, and confident but nothing seems to stick. WTF!? What gives?
I’m going to get real with you here for a moment. You might not like hearing this, but it’s important you do. And don’t worry, there’s a gift in this realness that we’ll talk about in a moment.
The reason why nothing has stuck is this: it wasn’t worth it to you. The cost of everything you tried outweighed the benefit. It just wasn’t worth it.
It might have felt like it when your motivation was high but when that initial motivation subsides you’re back, more or less, to where you started.
I told you there was a gift in this so let’s get to that before I lose you.
The gift is that none of this is your fault. For a guy who believes everything is your fault, this might come as a surprise. So, let me clarify this. It isn’t your fault these strategies didn’t work for you.
However, it is your fault you keep jumping from flashy new thing to flashy new thing. It is your fault you continue to fall into the hype and hyperbole of the latest and greatest weight loss “hack.” That’s on you.
But fear not, that doesn’t at all correlate to who you are as a person. “Fault” has such a negative connotation. What if we instead swapped in “responsibility” for fault? That should lighten things up a bit.
It’s your responsibility to know what you’re getting yourself into when it comes to training and nutrition and equally your responsibility to know when to ask for help. You reading this is, in essence, asking for help. You aren’t sure what to do so you start looking for answers. You’re beginning to ask better questions, too.
Instead of asking what’s the best way to lose weight, you’re starting to ask what’s best for you. Now, we’re getting somewhere.
We started off talking about how the things you tried just weren’t worth it, even if it felt like it was when you first started.
That right there is often a question we don’t consider asking; “is it worth it?”
Is it worth it to give up all of your favorite foods? Is it worth it spend hours mindlessly repeating the same workouts? Is it worth it to extremely restrict both what you eat and how much?
That last one deserves some elaboration, too. Is it worth it to:
always focus on food
get sick more often
have frequent mood swings
are unable to perform
lose your libido
mess up your hormones
Those are all of the common “costs” and side effects of aggressive dieting.
Now, if you’re a competitive athlete in the bodybuilding or figure sports, then the answer might be yes. But even for you, there is a start and end date. You’re intentionally doing this for an event and then scaling back to a more sustainable way of eating, moving, and living (hopefully).
For most of us, any of those “costs” are rarely worth it. I mean, isn’t the whole point of this journey to look, feel, and perform at your best?
In my experience, this is why more people start something and stop just a few weeks in; they feel just as awful as they did before they started. Why work so hard to feel like crap when I could just go back to what I was doing before? It’s a lose-lose situation.
But, it’s not your only option. There is a better way; a way I’ve seen work time and time again.
I’m fortunate to have certifications from Precision Nutrition, arguably the best company in the world at training, developing, and mentoring fitness and nutrition coaches.
My approach to coaching is naturally heavily influenced by their philosophy and methodologies which don’t include anything about extreme restriction and beating ourselves up in the gym.
And yet, they have thousands of incredible transformations. While I can’t boast those same numbers (yet), I can say that each person I’ve worked with who have trusted the process, trusted there is a better way, has also enjoyed lasting, sustainable success.
It all comes back to a focus on the fundamentals; the things that time and time again underpin the success of any transformation. If you look at the habits and behaviors of the healthiest, happiest, fittest people you know, they all, in their own way, adhere to the fundamentals.
They eat portions that work for them. They eat mostly real, whole foods 80-90% of the time to leave room for some indulgences. They move their bodies daily in a way they enjoy. They get enough sleep and drink enough water. They find ways to manage stress and build lasting, loving relationships.
Honestly, all of that is painfully boring. It’s not flashy. It’s tough to package all of that in some fancy program to be sold on Instagram via a picture of oiled up abs.
But it works. It always works. The fundamentals are undefeated.
But here’s the key in all of this. The happiest, healthiest, fittest people you know didn’t start out by completely overhauling their lives for the sake of the fundamentals. They started where they were, making small, progressive changes over time that moved them closer and closer to the life they wanted.
Instead of obsessing over every meal, they tried to make each meal the best they could with a focus on making it better and better over time.
Instead of killing themselves in the gym, they moved with purpose and intention, getting a little stronger over time.
Instead of swearing off a social life, they moved away from late nights out in favor of a few close, deep relationships that lends itself well to a decent bedtime.
Most things in our life live on a continuum. There’s black, white, and all of the grey in the middle. We just need to find that shade of grey (not that shade of grey) that helps us move closer to the person we want to become.
There’s more to life than just losing weight or building muscle - a lot more.
And dare I say it, there are ways to actually enjoy the process without making radical changes yet still finding ourselves in the best shape of our lives.
This is why I do what I do - to show you there is a better way. I believe there is a ripple effect to having healthier, happier, fitter people in this world. I mean, if a butterfly in China can cause a Hurricane in the US (or however the Butterfly Effect goes) image what an army of healthy, happy, fit people can do.
